읽고 있는 책은 How to do Discourse Analysis by James Paul Gee. 
아침 내내 트랜스크라입을 했지만 transcription해야할 데이터는 거의 3주치가 밀렸고, 
읽으려고 골라 놓은 논문들은 일곱 개쯤 두서없이 space 2에 치워져있고,
금요일까지 내야하는, 타이틀만 타이핑 해 놓은 컨퍼런스 프로포절 앱스트랙이 하나, 
왼손을 물끄러미 내려다보니 엄지와 검지에만 연한 핑크색 매니큐어를 발라놨다. 
어제 선배에게서 얻어온 책장과 선풍기는 아직도 차 트렁크에 실려있고, 
깨끗한 수건은 단 한 장도 남질 않아서 오늘은 빨래를 기필코 해야하며,
만년필엔 잉크가 다 떨어졌고, 내일이면 조엘군이 블랙스버그를 떠난다. 

읽고 싶은 책은 입 속의 검은 잎. 
가고 싶은 곳은 체코. 
갖고 싶은 것은 부드러운 가죽의 갈색 웨지힐.
하고 싶은 것은...비행코스에 등록해 조그만 비행기를 모는 것. 

가난한 현실의 나는, 한 시간 뒤면 카메라와 랩탑을 등짝에 가득 짊어지고 
내게 살 집과 먹을 것을 마련해주는 실험을 하러 터벅터벅 발걸음을 옮길테지.

공대 대학원생의 가난함

'가난한 학생'이라는 말을 늘 입에 달고 살지만, 
사실 그렇게 '가난'하게 살고 있는 건 아니다. 
나한테 가난함이란, 당장 쌀을 살 돈이 없어 가구를 팔고-
비싼 반찬 만들 돈이 없어 양배추만 내내 삶아먹고, 그런 거니까.

그렇지만 가끔 상대적인 가난함을 느낄 때가 있는데,
그건 주변 동료들이 새로운 전자제품(?)을 사들일 때. 
같은 오피스를 쓰는 친구는 올해 맥북프로에 카메라에 아이팟만 두 번을 바꾸더니 
오늘은 부모님이 아이패드 사주셨다고 자랑을... 

그래...나도 작년 초에 택스리턴 받아서 나온 지 얼마 안 된 
킨들 2를 사들인 전과가 있기는 하다만. 

그래서 뭐 하고 싶은 말은, 
오피스 메이트의 brand new 3G 아이패드가 부럽다는 그런 얘기. 큭. 

데이터 컬렉션 다녀오고 어쩌고 하느라 통장에 지독하게도 여유가 없어 
징징대보는 월요일 오후의 넋두리. 다 배부른 소리다. 안다니깐.

설 곳을 찾는 것.

대학원에 온 뒤로는 늘 따라다니는 고민. 
내가 마지막에 서고 싶은 자리는 어디이며, 
그러기 위해선 스스로를 어떻게 포지셔닝 해야 하나. 

반짝대며 시선을 잡아채는 눈부신 것들이 많다. 
끝없이 촉을 뻗치는 호기심을 따라가다 보면
가슴이 두근두근 대다가, 결국은 번잡한 곁가지 속에 길을 잃는다. 

늘 살피고 관심을 뻗는 것도 중요하지만, 
결국은 선택과 집중이다. 

회사 쪽과 스케줄이며 말 못할 뒷 사정이 많아 제대로 
실험 스케줄을 못 잡고 있는터라, 조금 늘어지기는 했지만
그래도 이미 데이터 컬렉션을 시작한 상태. 

잠들기 전에 침대에 누워 실험 프로토콜에 대해서 생각하다가 가슴이 철렁, 하고 내려 앉았다. 
속으로 든 생각은- This is it. This is going to be my DISSERTATION. 
So for the rest of my life, whenever someone asks me what I did for my Ph.D., I get to talk about this. Nothing else."

이미 프로포절을 한 지 꽤 됐고, 데이터 컬렉션까지 시작한 마당이지만, 
뭐랄까 조금 더 명확하게 내가 집중해야 할 것들이 말갛게 떠오르는 느낌이었다.

난 역시 team의 'behavior'에, 사람과 공간, 사람과 도구, 사람과 사람-들 사이의 인터랙션에, 
그리고 collaborative (아직도 최종 term은 결정을 못했으므로 일단은-) 
mental model convergence가 일어나는 '과정'에 집중하고 싶다는 것.

그걸 어떻게 새로운 프레임웍으로 해석해낼지, 혹은 어떤 탠져블한 결과물로 
만들어 낼 지는 데이터 나오는 거에 따라서 지금부터 차근차근 해가면 될 일이고.


어쨌거나- 뜬금없지만, 
내가 가지도 않을 샛길에 혹하지 말자. 
혼자 차분히 생각을 정리할 루틴을 확보하자. 

라는 게 오늘의 결론.

부족함

내 나태함의, 모자람의 무게를 이기지 못하고, 다시 휘청. 
덤벼들지 않고는 견딜 수 없는 걸 구해 시작하지 못한 게 
글쎄, 일단은 내 한계고 내가 처한 현실. 
충분히 재미있고, 내게 맞도록 두드려 늘리고 깎아내 고쳐왔지만
재미있다, 알고싶다- 는 것만으로는, 지금 내게 필요한 
120퍼센트 효율의 에너지원이 되어주지 못한다는 걸 느끼고 답답할 때가 있다. 
좀 독한 마음을 먹고 지긋이 파고들어야.

선택. 집중. 절제. 절용. 
지상 과제로구나.

Abstract

Macrocognition in teams involves the cognitive and collaborative processes by which teams integrate their members' knowledge into useful solutions. Macrocognition demonstrates one way teams are a technology to enhance performance and outperform individuals. We use combinations-of-contributions theory and the ideal group model of signal detection theory to further understand macrocognition and model the potential impact of macrocognition. Although not consistently beneficial, transactive knowledge systems, stimulated cognition and information sharing are presented as representations of macrocognition.

A thought experiment based on macrocognitive processes and the ideal group model illustrates the consequences of structures for distributing critical evidence among team members. Results show the value of redundancy in evidence distribution as well as indicate that macrocognition in teams can include processes that result in performance decrements. Macrocognition demonstrates how collaborative cognitive processes associated with team members' interaction and activities contribute to team performance on cognitive tasks.


이 논문은 팀 멤버간 상호작용/협력이 어떻게 팀의 퍼포먼스에 긍정적으로 작용하는지를 매크로코그니션을 이용해서 설명. 

요즘 분위기는 그런 것 같다- 팀 멤버들이 서로 잘 커뮤니케잇하고 정보공유하면서 협력할 때 그 팀이 하는 작업 결과물도 잘 나온다는 건 보이는데- 그 중간에 어떤 기전이 작용하느냐를 설명해보려는 다양한 시도가 나오는 중, 이랄까. Shared mental model 개념이 처음 93년에 나왔을 때도 같은 맥락에서 explanatory model로 나온 거였고, 거기 이런 저런 construct들이 붙고 떨어지고 변하면서 predictive power가 있네 없네 말이 많다가 이것저것 뭉뚱그려 team cognition이라고 부르던 단계를 거쳐서 이젠 macrocognition에 다 우르르 집어넣는 분위기-? 물론 매크로코그니션은 실험실 환경이 아닌 필드에서의 팀을 대상으로 한다는 차이가 있기는 한데. 내가 제대로 분위기 파악을 한 건지, 좀 더 읽어보고 체크할 필요가 있을 듯. 

본문에 나오는 macrocognition in teams 에 대한 개략적 설명. 

"Macrocognition reflects higher level cognitive processes like inferences, idea generation, evaluation and problem solving rather than lower level cognition like attention and perception. Macrocognition is more closely related to one’s understanding of information, interpretation and use of the information as knowledge that can be applied to address a problem. As reflected in macrocognition, if teams use more effective strategies when combining information and knowledge than individuals, this may enhance team performance on cognitive tasks such that it is superior to similarly treated individuals (Hinsz 1990). Moreover, this enhanced cognitive processing of macrocognition could be harnessed to improve performance.

Macrocognition involves the transformation of information into knowledge; knowledge that can be applied to help address a problem (Letsky et al. 2008). In this regard, macrocognition can be considered as a way that teams process information (Hinsz et al. 1997, Hinsz 2001). Information processing in teams involves the sharing of information and collaboration in the processing of information which are central to macrocognition. Specifically, information processing in teams involves sharing the encoding, storage, processing objectives, integration and judgement processes of the available information within the team (Hinsz et al. 1997). The collaboration in processing information so that a team can apply its knowledge to a problem is the hallmark of macrocognition. The expectation is that collaborative knowledge development in teams results in better solutions to problems."

매크로코그니션은  팀 레벨에서 일어나는 공동 아이디어 생산, 정보 분석, 평가 및 변환- 

즉 개인이 지닌 인지 리소스를 효율적 솔루션으로 바꾸는 과정을 말한다는 것. 

그런데 이 논문 재밌는 게, signal detection theory를 팀에다 적용해서 ideal team의 정보 처리 과정을 나타내는 식을 하나 제시했다. 식을 보면 팀 사이즈, 그리고 멤버들 간에 intercorrelation이 중요한 파라미터라는 게 보인다. 이건 너무 이론적인 얘기라 별로 나한테 보탬되는 건 아니지만, 그래도 나름 신선했음 ;-)

이론적 이슈만 다루는 저널이라, 가상의 실험까지 나오는데 참- 

맨날 empirical 스터디들만 읽다가 이거 보니까 적응이 잘 안된다. +_+

다음 건 다시 임피리컬 스터디, 08년 HFES에서 닥터 오사라누가 냈던 거 봐야지. 

그 때 학회 갔을 때 내가 팀 리서치 쪽으로 올 거란 걸 알았음 가서 톡도 듣고 얘기도 해보고 그랬을 걸. 

암튼, 오늘 이쯤 정리해두고 writing 모드로 전환해야지. 

OmmWriter에다가 논문 드래프트 챕터 1, 챕터 2를 각각 복사해서 개별 파일로 만들어뒀다. 

옆방 교수님이 중간보고를 요청하셨기 때문에 그간 바뀐 것들 다 정리해서 보내드려야 할테고-

그러자면 라이팅으로 짧게라도 옮겨두어야겠다 싶기도 하고 해서. 

게을러졌다가 긴장하고, 풀어졌다가 정신차리고- 의 반복이로구나. 

오늘이 벌써 7월 하고도 21일. 여름이 무섭게 흘러가고 있다.

[오늘의 논문] Making Love in the Network Closet: The Benefits and Work of Family Videochat

CSCW 분위기도 파악하고 관련 논문도 좀 읽어볼 겸 해서 ACM digital library를 뒤지다가 발견한 재밌어뵈는 논문. :)

Ames, M. G., Go, J., Kaye, J., & Spasojevic, M. (2010). Making Love in the Network Closet: The Benefits and Work of Family Videochat. Proceedings of ACM CSCW '10, 145-154.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the benefits of videochat for families and the corresponding work that home users engage in to make a video call run smoothly. We explore the varieties of social work required, including coordination work, presentation work, behavioral work, and scaffolding work, as well as the technical work necessary. We outline the benefits families enjoy for doing this work and discuss the ways in which families use videochat to reinforce their identity as a family and reinforce their family values, in effect making – as in creating – love. We conclude with recommendations for improving videochat and for designing with family values in mind more generally.

새로운 사실을 내놨거나 비교연구를 했거나 한 논문은 아니고, 
그냥 비디오챗이 서로 떨어져있는 가족들에게 어떤 역할을 하는지-
그리고 각 멤버들이 기존의 비디오챗을 이용할 때 어떤 문제를 겪는지 관찰-
(예를 들면 할머니 할아버지들은 프레임 안에 stay 하는 걸 자주 잊어버리는 경향이 있다)
좀 더 발전된 인터페이스를 recommend 한 게 이 페이퍼의 요지. 
(가족들끼리의 화상통화인 경우, 그룹으로 채팅하는 경우가 많으니까, 
화면 분할을 수신자와 송신자 1:1로 가로로 배치한다든가 하는 것)

미국 처음 왔을 때 가족들이랑 가끔 MSN 메신저로 비디오 채팅을 하곤 했었는데. 
노트북에 웹캠 달아서 온 집안을 돌아다니면서 집은 어떻게 생겼는지 보여드리기도 하고. 
최근엔 조카 얼굴 보려고 비디오챗 한 게 마지막이네. :-) 

암튼, CSCW 리서치는 주로 workplace 위주인데, family value랑 관련된 페이퍼가 있어서 재밌게 봤다.

몇시간째 적잖이 눈이 쓰려온다
눅눅한 연구실책상에 팔뚝이
쩍 달라 붙었다 떨어진다
이제는 아무렇지 않어
랩선배 한마리쯤 슥 지나가도
무거운 메일 박스엔
시간마다 교수님 메일이 멈출 생각을 않는다
가슴이 답답해 온다
삐걱대는 문을 열고 밖에 나가본다
아직 환한 교수님방이 너무 가까워 숨쉬기가
쉽지를 않다 수만번 본 것만 같다
어지러워 쓰러질 정도로 익숙하기만 하다
남은 사람 없이 텅빈 랩을 잠근다
싸구려 논문을 읽는다

눅눅한 연구실책상에 팔뚝이
쩍 하고 달라 붙었다가 떨어진다

뭐 몇 년간 세숫대야에
고여있는 물 마냥 그냥 완전히 썩어가지고
이거는 뭐 감각이 없어
랩세미나땐 구석 자리에 쭈그리고 앉아서
멍하니 그냥 가만히 보다보면은
이거는 뭔가 아니다 싶어
백날 써봐야 희끄므레죽죽한 저게
논문이라고 책상위를 뒤덮고 있는건지
저거는 뭔가 논문이라고 하기에는 뭔가 
너무 얇게 졸업은 어림도 없게
조금만 늦어도 누군가가
똑 같은걸 쓸 것 같은데 
달력에 미팅날은 벌써 꽉차 있으나마나
한달만에 돌려받은 피칠갑된 
논문을 보고 어우 약간 놀라
제 멋대로 남이써놓은 논문 갖다 
실험을 해보다 보면은
나았던 치질이 도지도록해봐도
당췌 데이터는 빠져 나올줄을 몰라
언제 보낸지도 모르는 못살겠다 친구한테보낸
메일을 다시열어보니 아뿔사 교수님 참조가
이제는 메일이 난지 내가 메일인지도 몰라
졸업 하기도 전에 찍히는 이런 상황은 뭔가

싸구려 논문을 읽는다

Acknowledgment

조엘군 논문 디펜스가 다음 주로 다가왔다. 
해서 요즘은 한창 막바지 논문 수정과 디펜스 프리젠테이션 준비로 분주하다. 
논문 마무리 단계가 되다 보니, acknowledgment를 썼고, 
그걸 오늘 나한테 보여줬는데- 제일 마지막 이름이 내 이름이다. 
기뻤고, 고마웠고, 그리고 동시에 묘했다. 

예정대로 작년 여름 끝날 무렵, 혹은 가을쯤 졸업했더라면 
내 이름은 저기 없지 않았을까, 하는 생각도 들었고. 
내년 언제가 되었든, 내 논문을 마무리할 때가 되었을 때-
그의 이름을 가장 마지막에 따로 언급할 수 있을지, 싶기도 하고.

가장 친했던 친구인 엘양과 이런저런 일 때문에 서먹한 요즘.
어떤 이가 고마운지, 지금 과연 누구와 함께 걷고 있는 건지를 자꾸 생각한다.

Abstract


One of the significant challenges for the burgeoning field of macrocognition is the development of more sophisticated models that are able to adequately explain and predict complex cognitive processes. This is even more critical when specifying research questions involving cognition unfolding across interacting individuals, that is, macrocognition in teams. In this article, we provide a foundation for developing a model of macrocognition focusing on collaborating problem-solving teams with a measurement framework for studying macrocognitive processes in this context.


We first discuss an important set of key assumptions from team measurement theory that form a critical foundation for this model. We then describe the core definitions we suggest are foundational to the conceptualization of macrocognition in teams. We conclude with a description of the key dimensions and subcomponents of our model in order to lay the foundation for a principled approach to measuring and understanding macrocognition in teams. 



확실히 이 저널은 theoretical issues, 를 다루다 보니 원론적인 논문들이 주를 이룬다.

이건 매크로코그니션, 의 컨셉 자체를 정리해주는 페이퍼구나. 

2004년에 나온 Team Cognition 책의 에디터들, 닥터 피오레와 살라스 두 분이 다 저자로 이름을 올렸다. 


교수님이 이 저널은 HF에 비해 세컨 티어고, 아무래도 내 리뷰는 이론적인 이야기가 될 것 같으니

리뷰 논문은 여길 고려해보는 게 좋을 것 같다 그러셨는데, 

세컨 티어라는 저널에도 큰 이름들 뿐이라, 아무래도 위축되는 기분은 어쩔 수가 없군. 


오늘은 transcription 할 게 많은 관계로, 대강 훑어보고 킨들에 넣어둬야겠다. 

내일 운전하면서 text-to-speech로 들어야지. :-)

Abstract
Mental model convergence is a macrocognitive process critical to team development. Yet, little is known about how the convergence process occurs in a team domain. To date, researchers have examined convergence at specific points in time after performance episodes. While this approach has moved the field forward, research is needed that captures the dynamics of the convergence process as it occurs during collaborative activities. 

To facilitate this needed research, we present a framework for examining mental model convergence via communicated mental model content. Our framework is theoretically based on research in cognitive science and communication, as well as more recent team mental model research. By explicitly establishing the theoretical connection between mental model convergence and team communication, we extend the extant research that links communication and team cognition and address a gap in the team mental model literature regarding how to examine the mental model convergence process over time. 

팀 멘탈모델 자체보다는 그 형성 과정에 더 중점을 뒀다 이거지-? 
근데 난 왜 지금까지 멘탈모델 컨버젼스 프로세스 관련해선 읽은 게 없는거냐...쿨럭. 
일단 리뷰 잘 돼있는 것 같으니까, 이걸로 한 번 훑어보고 정리 좀 해야겠다.
